Folate metabolism: how the body makes use of folate [vitamin B-9].

Folate, also known as folacin is required for the body to make DNA and RNA and metabolize amino acids necessary for cell division. As humans cannot make folate, it is required in the diet, making it an essential nutrient. It occurs naturally in many foods.

Folate metabolism is highly dependent on adequate supplies of circulating vitamin B-12 and deficiencies B-12 often mask as a folate deficiency.  Both vitamins are critical to normal metabolism.
